Navigating Your June 2026 Tax Deadlines: A Blueprint for Small Businesses and 1099 Earners

June marks the midpoint of the financial year, bringing a fresh set of tax obligations for small business owners, high-income 1099 earners, and individuals. Led by Tony Eldemire, CPA, our team at Ez Tax Preparation in Vero Beach, Florida, spends this season helping clients in the construction, trucking, and restaurant industries stay out of the IRS crosshairs. Staying ahead of deadlines is the absolute foundation of financial clarity.

This month’s tax calendar covers everything from essential estimated tax payments for self-employed professionals to specific reporting obligations for tipped employees and taxpayers living abroad. Preparing now ensures you retain control of your cash flow and avoid unnecessary penalties.

Early June Milestones: IRA Valuations and Tip Reporting

The month kicks off with a critical deadline for financial institutions. By June 1, 2026, IRA trustees must issue Form 5498, which reports the fair market value (FMV) of your IRA as of December 31, 2025. This valuation is the exact figure used to calculate your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) if you are age 73 or older in 2026.

Shortly after, on June 10, the focus shifts to the service industry. If you work for tips and earned more than $20 during May, you must report this income to your employer using IRS Form 4070 (or a signed statement with your name, Social Security number, employer details, and total tips). Your employer uses this to calculate FICA and income tax withholding. If your regular wages fall short of covering these taxes, the uncollected amount will appear in box 8 of your W-2, and you will need to settle the balance when filing your annual return.

June 15: The Critical Q2 Estimated Tax Deadline

For the independent contractors, trucking operators, and construction entrepreneurs we partner with nationwide, June 15 marks the deadline for your second-quarter estimated tax installment for 2026.

The U.S. tax system operates on a "pay-as-you-earn" basis. While W-2 employees handle this through payroll withholding, self-employed individuals must make proactive quarterly payments. Missing these payments triggers underpayment penalties, calculated quarterly at the federal short-term rate plus three percentage points.

Avoiding Penalties with Safe Harbor Estimates

You can bypass underpayment penalties by meeting IRS "safe harbor" thresholds. If your total tax due minus withholding is under $1,000, no penalty applies. Otherwise, your prepayments must equal either 90% of your current year's tax liability or 100% of your previous year's tax liability. For high-income earners whose Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) exceeds $150,000 ($75,000 if married filing separately), the prior-year safe harbor jumps to 110%.

If you experience a massive surge in income—such as landing a major commercial contract or selling a lucrative asset—your quarterly estimates require immediate adjustment. State safe harbor rules and deadlines can also vary from federal guidelines, making a customized tax strategy essential.

June 15 Filing Deadlines for Taxpayers Abroad

June 15 is also the traditional tax filing and payment deadline for U.S. citizens and resident aliens living and working outside the United States and Puerto Rico. To secure a four-month extension, you can file Form 4868, pushing your filing date to October 15. However, this is strictly an extension to file, not an extension to pay. If you anticipate owing the IRS, you must estimate and pay that liability by June 15 to avoid late payment penalties.

Military personnel in combat zones or qualified hazardous duty areas receive automatic extensions, generally lasting 180 days after leaving the zone, plus any remaining days they had to file upon entering. Additionally, taxpayers impacted by the terrorist attacks in Israel throughout 2024 and 2025 have until September 30, 2026, to file and pay taxes otherwise due between September 30, 2025, and September 30, 2026.

Navigating Disaster Areas and Weekend Rules

As a rule, if an IRS due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, it is automatically extended to the next business day. Furthermore, when a region is federally declared a disaster area, the IRS frequently grants tax relief and pushes back filing deadlines. Based in Florida, our firm knows exactly how severe weather disrupts financial operations. To verify if your area qualifies for an extension, check the official resources:
