March 2026 Tax Calendar: Critical Deadlines for Business Owners

For many of our clients here in Vero Beach and across the nation, March signifies the shift from gathering documents to getting returns out the door. While individual filers are eyeing April, business owners—especially those in construction, trucking, and service industries—know that March is the real deadline month.

This month brings the due dates for pass-through entities like Partnerships and S Corporations, along with final reporting requirements for information returns. Keeping your books clean and meeting these dates is the best way to keep the IRS out of your business so you can get back to work.

March 2: The Paper Filing & Information Deadline

If you are still handling certain forms via paper filing, your timeline is tighter than those filing electronically. While we always advocate for the speed and security of electronic records, here are the requirements if you are filing physical copies.

Information Returns (Forms 1099 & 1096)

You must file government copies of information returns (Forms 1099) and the accompanying transmittal Forms 1096 for payments made in 2025. Note that this applies to forms other than the 1099-NEC (Non-Employee Compensation), which was due back in February.

Gambling Winnings Reporting

For payers of gambling winnings, Form 1096 and Copy A of all Forms W-2G issued for 2025 must be filed now. If you choose to file these electronically, you gain a bit of breathing room with an extension until March 31.

Health Coverage Reporting (ALE)

Applicable Large Employers (ALEs) filing paper forms must submit Forms 1094-C and 1095-C. Other providers of minimum essential coverage must file Forms 1094-B and 1095-B. As with other information returns, e-filing these documents extends your deadline to March 31.

Tip Reporting for Food & Beverage

Large food and beverage establishments must file Form 8027 (Employer’s Annual Information Return of Tip Income and Allocated Tips). If you operate multiple locations, use Form 8027-T to summarize and transmit them. E-filers get an automatic extension to March 31.

Farmers and Fishermen

Your 2025 income tax return (Form 1040 or 1040-SR) is due, along with any tax payment. However, if you already paid your estimated tax by January 15, 2026, you have until April 15 to file the return.

March 16: The Big Date for Partnerships and S Corps

This is the most critical date of the month for many of our clients. If you operate your business as a Partnership or an S Corporation, your return is due. Missing this date can lead to costly late-filing penalties per partner or shareholder.

Partnerships (Form 1065)

You must file the 2025 calendar year return (Form 1065) and provide each partner with their Schedule K-1. This schedule is vital as it reports their share of income, deductions, and credits, which they need to file their personal returns. If applicable, Schedule K-3 must also be provided.

Need more time? If your books aren't quite audit-ready, don't panic. You can file Form 7004 to request an automatic 6-month extension. This extends the filing deadline to September 15, giving us time to turn messy records into accurate financial statements.

S Corporations (Form 1120-S)

Similar to partnerships, S Corps must file their 2025 income tax return (Form 1120-S) and pay any tax due. You must also furnish a copy of Schedule K-1 (and Schedule K-3 if applicable) to each shareholder.

If you cannot file by this date, file Form 7004 for a 6-month extension. Remember, an extension to file is not an extension to pay. You must estimate and pay any tax owed by March 16 to avoid interest and penalties.

Concept of savings and financial planning

S Corporation Election (Form 2553)

Strategic tax planning often involves restructuring entities to save money. If you want your business to be taxed as an S Corporation for the calendar year 2026, you must file Form 2553 by March 16. Filing late means the S Corp status generally won't take effect until 2027, potentially missing out on a year of tax savings.

Payroll and Withholding Deposits

If you are on a monthly deposit schedule for Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income tax (payroll or non-payroll), the deposit for February payments is due.

March 31: Electronic Filing Deadline

If you utilize electronic filing—which facilitates faster processing and fewer errors—March 31 is your final deadline for several forms.

  • Forms 1099 and W-2G: This applies if you are filing electronically with the IRS. (Note: 1099-NEC forms were due earlier).
  • Health Coverage Forms: Electronic filing deadline for ALE Forms 1094-C, 1095-C, 1094-B, and 1095-B.
  • Tip Reporting: Electronic filing deadline for Form 8027.

Important Notes on Timing

Weekends & Holidays: Compliance rules state that if a due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the deadline is pushed to the next business day.

Disaster Area Extensions: When a geographical area is designated as a federal disaster area, the IRS often provides automatic extensions. Given our location in Florida and clients nationwide, we monitor these closely.

At Ez Tax Preparation, we specialize in helping business owners navigate these dates with clarity, not jargon. If you are worried about meeting the March 16 deadline or need help organizing disorganized records, contact us today.
