2026 Refunds Are Up: Unpacking the One Big Beautiful Bill Act

We are just a few weeks into the 2026 tax season, and the numbers coming out of the IRS are already telling an interesting story. Across the country—and right here in Vero Beach—taxpayers are seeing a noticeable bump in their refund checks. Early statistics show the average refund has climbed to $2,476, up from $2,169 at this time in 2025.

That is a 14.2% increase. While it isn’t quite the $1,000 jump some Washington policymakers predicted, an extra $300 in your pocket is certainly better than a kick in the teeth. It is important to remember that it is still early March; these averages will likely shift as more complex returns from business owners and investors get processed. However, the trend is undeniable: the new provisions in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) are finally hitting bank accounts.

The "Blue-Collar" Benefits in the OBBBA

At Ez Tax Preparation, we specialize in helping hardworking entrepreneurs and employees—from construction crews to restaurant staff—keep more of what they earn. The OBBBA introduced several targeted deductions that are directly contributing to these higher refunds.

Here is a breakdown of the key changes driving the numbers:

  • The Overtime Premium Pay Deduction: This is a massive win for our clients in the trades. The law now allows you to deduct the "half" portion of your "time-and-a-half" overtime pay. The deduction is capped at $12,500 for single filers and $25,000 for married couples filing jointly.

  • The Tips Tax Deduction: For those in the service industry, qualified tips are now deductible up to $25,000 per year. If you are married, you must file jointly to claim this.

  • Auto Loan Interest Deduction: If you bought a new, U.S.-assembled vehicle for personal use (loans originating after 2024), you can deduct the interest up to $10,000. Note that this cannot be a loan from a relative; it must be a secured auto loan.

Expert Note on Income Limits: Be aware that the three deductions above have phase-out thresholds. Generally, benefits begin to decrease for single filers with a Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) between $100,000 and $150,000, and fully phase out at higher levels. We can help you calculate exactly where you fall.

Additional Tax Relief Provisions

Beyond the targeted deductions, broader changes are helping families and retirees:

  • Enhanced Standard Deduction & Senior Bonus: The standard deduction has jumped to $31,500 for married joint filers and $15,750 for singles. Plus, there is a new $6,000 "Senior Bonus" for taxpayers 65 and older, which is a significant benefit for our Florida retiree community.

  • Expanded Child Tax Credit: The credit is now $2,200 per child. Full benefits are available for joint filers earning up to $400,000.

  • Higher SALT Cap: The State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction limit has been raised from $10,000 to $40,000, offering relief for property owners, though this caps out for earners over $500,000.

Why Else Are Checks Bigger?

It isn't just the new law doing the heavy lifting. A few administrative quirks are also padding these refunds.

First, withholding tables lagged behind the new laws. Many tax cuts were enacted retroactively or mid-year, but the IRS didn't update payroll withholding guidelines immediately. This means many employees had too much tax taken out of their paychecks throughout 2025, resulting in a larger lump sum back now.

Second, inflation adjustments to tax brackets are helping to prevent "bracket creep," ensuring cost-of-living raises don't accidentally push you into a higher tax rate. Finally, the Adoption Tax Credit (up to $5,000) is now partially refundable, putting cash in hand even if you owe zero tax.

Navigating IRS Headwinds

While the refunds are promising, the processing side is facing challenges. The IRS has reported a loss of 25% of its workforce since January 2025 and is battling a significant backlog. We are seeing a slight dip in the speed of processed returns (down about 3.1%).

If you haven't filed yet because you are worried about the complexity of the OBBBA or potential delays, don't let that paralyze you. At Ez Tax Preparation, we turn tax chaos into clarity. We are fully up-to-speed on every new deduction, from overtime pay to the senior bonus.

Whether you are a trucker with messy logs or a business owner looking for strategic tax savings, we ensure your return is accurate and audit-ready. Let us handle the government so you can get back to work.
